Men's Health Week 2020
Every year, in the middle of June (15th-21st), the world pauses to celebrate Men’s Health Week. It’s a time dedicated to raising awareness of the key issues in men’s health and to celebrate the role men play in society.
Everyone deserves to live a full and healthy life, and it’s important to reduce the health inequalities that men face. In Australia, 1 in 8 men is likely to experience depression, and 1 in 5 will experience anxiety. Men also live 4.4 years less than women and have an increased risk of dying from liver and heart disease.
While women are more likely to have regular contact with doctors, men are typically less inclined to actively take control of their own health because of the lack of information and barriers that prevent them from accessing health services. The Western definition of ‘masculinity’ can also make men feel like they need to ‘tough it out’ and be strong.
In particular, men with disabilities often face greater physical and mental health challenges that hinder them from participating in everyday life. They also face many barriers when it comes to accessing timely and effective health care, such as inadequate transportation, lack of assistance with communication, and discriminatory attitudes amongst healthcare professionals.
This week, we encourage you to reach out to the men and boys in your life and celebrate what they mean to you. By starting simple conversations around mental and physical health, we can actively support the wellbeing of our partners, brothers, and sons, so they can lead happier and healthier lives.
At EveryHuman, we want to empower every man to take control of their health and independence through fashionable assistive technology. We recognise that men with disabilities experience limited clothing & footwear options, and we’re committed to helping them dress independently and reclaim their confidence. By bringing adaptive, easy-to-wear clothes onto one platform, we hope to help every male express their true style and pursue their health goals - no matter what their ability.
